Kennedy Tunnel, Eastern Santiago

Project Description:

A flagship development for Central-Eastern Santiago, this underground construction project covers more than 230 m2 and is built in soft ground. It carries up to five eastbound lanes, has a length of 1,200 m, and is currently among the three finalists for the ITA Tunneling Awards 2017, an international competition featuring outstanding tunnel projects around the world.

It was opened on October 29, 2017 by then President Michelle Bachelet, the Minister of Public Works, and the Mayor of Las Condes district.

The project complies with the latest security standards, incorporates an energy-saving lighting system, a ventilation system and a network of surveillance cameras, and has a capacity of 8,500 vehicles per hour. Following its opening, the tunnel has carried approximately 45,000 vehicles daily.

Among the immediate benefits of the project has been a reduction in congestion at the Alonso de Córdova, Vespucio Norte, and Vespucio Sur interchanges.
