Construction of the New Maipo Bridge

Construction of two 465 meter-long structures, each carrying a one-way, four-lane carriageway complete with inside and outside shoulders of 1.0 m and 2.5 m, respectively. Additional construction of approximately three kilometers of expressway, providing access to the new Maipo bridge and connection to Route 5 to the north and south.

The project was specified according to the anti-seismic standards devised in the wake of the 2010 earthquake, including footings sunk into the river bed and displacement buffers for the post-tensioned box girder superstructure. Instruments to measure deformations and accelerations in the main parts of the structure during seismic events were also installed.

The new Maipo bridge is located downstream of its predecessor, and meets the same standards as other urban roads, including a complete network of local and service roads to maintain pre-existing local connectivity. In addition, the new Maipo bridge is fitted with LED street lamps, a new TAG gantry system, road signage, a new footbridge to the south, and Stone Mastic Asphalt pavement the length of the new stretch, including the bridge.

The structure had an estimated daily capacity of 80 thousand vehicles, and cost 61 million dollars. Work took place between October 2014 and December 2017.
