East-West Road Network Improvement Plan
A set of projects and improvements to the East-West system, including:
- Improvements to the junction between Lo Saldes and the Pérez Zujovic roundabout.
- Construction of sections 2 and 3 of the Costanera Sur highway and connections to Costanera Norte.
- Construction of the Kennedy Tunnel.
- Extension of the Costanera Norte highway between the La Dehesa and Padre Arteaga bridges. These projects are the result of UF 12,316,395 of investment, and currently stand at 67% complete. Recently completed projects include the Kennedy Tunnel, a four-lane, 1.3 km eastbound tunnel that runs parallel to Kennedy Avenue along the section between the Pérez Zujovic bridge and the Vespucio-Kennedy interchange. Completion of the tunnel allows for a redesign of Kennedy Avenue, creating a three-lane westbound expressway and two additional lanes for local traffic.
The project includes construction of the new Vespucio-Kennedy interchange, involving creation of tunnels to provide underground and express connections for vehicles, reorganization of accesses and connections to and from the Américo Vespucio South and North highways and Alonso de Córdova street, and creation of a link to the planned Américo Vespucio East highway. Vespucio Park – which had previously been split in two at the Kennedy flyover – has now been united, creating a continuous green corridor for pedestrians and cyclists, extending all the way from Las Hualtatas to Cerro Colorado.
